Who’s behind this

A platform engineer who runs his own infrastructure. Photos, file sync, monitoring, media — the works. I’ve been doing it for years, I’ve broken things spectacularly, and I’ve learned what actually matters vs what’s just nerd vanity.

Why this exists

Most self-hosting content falls into two camps:

  1. Reddit threads — useful but scattered, buried in comments, outdated within months.
  2. Corporate docs — technically accurate but written by people who’ve never actually run this stuff at 2 AM when the backup fails.

I wanted something in between. Tested guides, honest opinions, and no filler.

Who this is for

People who are curious about self-hosting but need some help getting started and don’t want to read a 5000-word essay to figure out what to buy first.

What you’ll find here

  • Tutorials — Step-by-step deployment guides. Docker Compose files that actually work.
  • Comparisons — Honest head-to-head comparisons. I test the things I compare. No “we asked ChatGPT to list 10 VPS providers.”
  • Guides — What to buy, what to skip, how to think about self-hosting.
